One of the most common questions cat owners ask before traveling is:

One of the most common questions cat owners ask before traveling is:

“How often should someone check on my cat while I’m away?”

The answer is not always simple because every cat is different.

Some cats are extremely independent and perfectly content relaxing quietly at home for most of the day. Others become lonely, anxious, destructive, or stressed when left alone too long.

In my experience as a pet sitter, I generally recommend once-a-day drop-in visits for most cats. However, the right schedule depends on your individual cat’s personality, age, health, behavior, and needs.

Why Once-a-Day Visits Are Usually Recommended?

For many healthy adult cats, one daily visit is enough to:

Refresh food and water

Scoop the litter box

Check for signs of illness or stress

Make sure the cat is safe

Provide companionship and interaction

Cats are usually much more comfortable staying in their own home environment instead of being moved somewhere unfamiliar. Keeping them at home helps maintain their routines, smells, sleeping spots, and sense of security.

That said, drop-in visits are about much more than simply putting food in a bowl.

During visits, I also:

Check water levels

Make sure the cat has not vomited anywhere

Ensure they have not gotten into anything dangerous

Watch for unusual behavior or signs of stress

Make sure the home environment still looks safe and normal

A lot can happen in a day, especially with curious cats.

Some Cats Need More Frequent Visits

Not every cat does well with only one visit per day.

Some situations where I may recommend more frequent drop-ins include:

Cats with separation anxiety

Senior cats

Cats with medical needs

Cats that require medication

Cats that become destructive or mischievous when bored

Very social cats that crave companionship

Some cats genuinely become sad or stressed when left alone too long. Others are constantly getting into cabinets, chewing things, knocking objects over, or finding ways to create trouble.

Owners usually know their own cat best.

If you already know your cat struggles with loneliness, stress, or routines changing, adding a second visit each day may help them feel much more comfortable while you’re away.

How Long Is Too Long for a Cat to Be Completely Alone?

In my opinion, two days is too long for most cats to go without someone physically checking on them.

Even with:

automatic feeders

large water bowls

self-cleaning litter boxes

things can still go wrong.

Power outages happen. Water bowls get tipped over. Cats vomit. Cats hide when sick. Automated devices can fail.

This is why I believe someone should physically see the cat regularly while you are away.

Are Automatic Feeders Enough?

This depends entirely on the pet.

Some cats are low-maintenance and adapt very well to automated setups combined with regular visits. Others absolutely do not.

Technology can help make care easier, but it should not completely replace human observation and interaction.

A drop-in visit is not only about feeding your cat. It is also about noticing problems early.

Signs Your Cat Is Handling Your Trip Well

Every cat reacts differently when their owner leaves.

Some cats continue their normal routines almost immediately and act completely relaxed during visits. Others become quieter, clingier, or more withdrawn.

Signs a cat is handling things well may include:

Eating normally

Greeting the sitter normally

Playing or interacting

Relaxing comfortably in usual spots

Using the litter box normally

Possible signs of stress may include:

Hiding more than usual

Refusing food

Excessive vocalizing

Acting unusually aggressive or fearful

Vomiting from stress

Destructive behavior

Again, every cat is different, which is why personalized care matters.

Consistency Matters Just as Much as Time

When it comes to drop-in visits, I believe both consistency and quality time matter.

Cats thrive on routine.

Having visits happen around the same time each day can help reduce stress and create predictability while their owners are gone.

At the same time, visits should not feel rushed. Cats still benefit from attention, interaction, monitoring, and companionship, even if they are more independent than dogs.

Final Thoughts

There is no universal answer for how often a cat should get drop-in visits during a trip because every cat has a different personality and comfort level.

Some cats may do perfectly fine with one daily visit. Others truly need more companionship and supervision.

The most important thing is making sure your cat stays:

safe

healthy

emotionally comfortable

monitored regularly

As a pet sitter, I always encourage owners to think honestly about their cat’s individual needs instead of relying on blanket advice online.

At the end of the day, you know your pet better than anyone else.

Need reliable cat care while you're away?

Signs of a Good Dog Boarding Facility: What to Look For

Leaving your dog behind while you travel can be stressful. Most pet owners are not just worried about whether their dog will be fed and let outside — they’re worried about whether their dog will feel safe, calm, and cared for while they’re away.

Leaving your dog behind while you travel can be stressful. Most pet owners are not just worried about whether their dog will be fed and let outside — they’re worried about whether their dog will feel safe, calm, and cared for while they’re away.

The truth is, not all boarding situations are the same.

Some dogs do perfectly fine in large kennel-style facilities with lots of activity. But many dogs become overwhelmed, anxious, stressed, or exhausted in loud environments filled with unfamiliar dogs, constant barking, and very little downtime.

As someone who runs a home-style pet sitting business, I’ve seen firsthand what helps dogs truly relax while their owners are away — and I’ve also heard many stories from clients who came to me after bad experiences elsewhere.

Here are some important green flags and red flags to look for when choosing boarding care for your dog.

Green Flags: Signs of a Good Boarding Facility or Pet Sitter

They encourage meet-and-greets

A good pet sitter or boarding facility should want you to come see the environment beforehand.

If someone quickly offers for you to visit, tour the space, ask questions, and let your dog get comfortable first, that’s usually a very good sign. It shows transparency and confidence in the care they provide.

Pay attention during the meet-and-greet too. You can often tell very quickly when someone genuinely loves animals. The best sitters naturally connect with dogs right away and make them feel comfortable.

The environment is clean and calm

One of the biggest red flags is walking into a place that smells strongly of urine or dogs.

Dogs obviously live there temporarily, so it should smell lived-in to some degree — but it should never smell dirty, overwhelming, or neglected.

A good boarding environment should feel:

Clean

Calm

Organized

Safe

Relaxed

If the environment feels chaotic to you, imagine how it feels to your dog.

They are honest about routines and downtime

One of the most important questions pet owners should ask is:

“How much time will my dog realistically spend alone in a kennel, room, or crate?”

Many dogs in large facilities spend far more time confined than owners realize.

Some places advertise nonstop playgroups and constant socialization as a luxury feature, but in reality, many dogs become mentally exhausted from never getting a break.

Dogs need downtime too.

Constant activity, unfamiliar animals, loud barking, and overstimulation can create chronic stress, especially for anxious dogs, older dogs, or dogs used to quiet homes.

They don’t overcrowd

This is a huge one.

Many clients who came to me after bad boarding experiences had similar complaints:

Their dog came home smelling like urine

Their dog looked stressed or unkempt

There were fights between dogs

Their dog seemed emotionally overwhelmed afterward

In my opinion, too many boarding businesses focus on maximizing the number of bookings instead of maximizing quality care.

Large playgroups may look exciting in photos, but more dogs often means:

More stress

More overstimulation

More competition

More risk of fights

Less individual attention

A calmer environment with fewer dogs is often much healthier emotionally for many pets.

They work with your dog’s normal lifestyle

Every dog is different.

Some dogs are highly social and energetic. Others are quiet homebodies who spend most of their day relaxing with their owners.

A good pet sitter understands this and adjusts care accordingly.

For example, many of my clients are older adults whose dogs are used to peaceful homes and slower daily routines. Throwing those dogs into loud, high-energy group environments can be incredibly stressful for them.

Dogs with separation anxiety, senior dogs, medically needy dogs, or dogs used to quiet households often do much better in calm home-style environments.

They understand that dogs may act differently while boarding

This is something I think many owners need to hear.

Even the best-trained dog may behave differently during their first boarding stay.

They may:

Have an accident indoors

Get into the garbage

Chew something unexpectedly

Act nervous or clingy

Pace or whine

That does not automatically mean your dog is “bad.”

Stress changes behavior.

A good pet sitter expects some adjustment behaviors and handles them calmly instead of making owners feel guilty or embarrassed over every little thing.

Red Flags: Warning Signs to Watch For

They won’t show you where your dog stays

If someone refuses to let you see the actual environment your dog will be staying in, that’s a major red flag.

Transparency matters.

The place feels chaotic

Some boarding places are so loud and overstimulating that dogs remain constantly on alert.

Imagine spending days surrounded by unfamiliar dogs barking nonstop with little ability to fully relax.

That environment may work for some dogs, but many become emotionally exhausted from it.

They focus more on marketing buzzwords than actual care

Terms like:

“Luxury boarding”

“All-day play”

“Nonstop socialization”

“Huge playgroups”

sound impressive, but they do not automatically equal better care.

Sometimes it simply means many dogs packed together in one space.

Always ask what the dog’s actual daily experience looks like.

Signs Your Dog Had a Good Boarding Experience

When dogs return home after a positive stay, they usually settle back into normal life fairly quickly.

Good signs include:

Returning to normal routines

Eating normally

Sleeping normally

Acting relaxed and comfortable

Warning signs after boarding may include:

Acting unusually clingy

Being skittish or fearful

Refusing food

Acting lethargic

Seeming emotionally shut down

These behaviors can indicate your dog experienced significant stress.

Final Thoughts

At the end of the day, the “best” boarding option is not always the fanciest or the biggest.

For many dogs, the best environment is simply one that feels safe, calm, clean, predictable, and loving.

As a dog owner myself, the reason I built my business around a home-style environment is because I once struggled to find that kind of care for my own anxious senior dog. I knew there had to be other owners looking for the same thing.

Your dog may not be able to tell you how their boarding experience went in words — but their behavior before, during, and after the stay will tell you a lot.

And the right pet sitter will care about your dog’s emotional wellbeing just as much as their physical care.

Why Meet & Greets Are So Important Before Boarding Your Dog

One of the questions I get asked a lot is why I like to schedule meet-and-greets before boarding new dogs. The answer is simple — it helps make sure everyone feels comfortable, safe, and stress-free before your pet’s stay.

One of the questions I get asked a lot is why I like to schedule meet-and-greets before boarding new dogs. The answer is simple — it helps make sure everyone feels comfortable, safe, and stress-free before your pet’s stay.

Every dog has a different personality, energy level, routine, and comfort zone. Meeting beforehand gives us a chance to get to know each other and helps me learn what makes your dog feel most at home.

Meet & Greets Help Dogs Feel More Comfortable

For many dogs, visiting a new place for the first time can feel overwhelming. A meet-and-greet allows them to:

Explore the environment

Smell around and get familiar

Meet me in a calm setting

Adjust before staying overnight

This can make a huge difference in reducing anxiety during their actual stay.

It Gives Pet Parents Peace of Mind Too

I know how important it is to feel confident leaving your pets with someone. Meet-and-greets give owners the opportunity to:

Ask questions

See where their pets will stay

Discuss routines and preferences

Talk about feeding schedules, medications, sleeping habits, and personalities

I want pet parents to feel comfortable and know exactly where their pets will be cared for.

Every Dog Is Different

Some dogs settle in immediately, while others need a little extra time and patience. During meet-and-greets, I pay attention to things like:

Energy level

Comfort around new environments

Separation anxiety

Social behavior

Stress signals

Special care needs

This helps me provide more personalized care during their stay.

Why Smaller In-Home Boarding Is Different

Unlike large kennel environments, I only take one family’s pets at a time for boarding. That means dogs get:

A quieter environment

More one-on-one attention

Flexible routines

A real home setting

Plenty of supervision and affection

For many dogs, especially anxious dogs or dogs used to sleeping near their owners, this setup can feel much more comfortable than a busy kennel.

Spring and Summer Are Busy Seasons

As we head into the warmer months here in Northeast Ohio, boarding requests start increasing quickly with vacations, weddings, graduations, and holiday travel coming up.

Scheduling meet-and-greets early helps make sure everything is ready before your trip dates arrive.

Final Thoughts

I truly love getting to know each pet and their personalities before their stay. Meet-and-greets are one of the best ways to help create a positive experience for both pets and their owners.

If you’re planning travel this spring or summer and are looking for personalized in-home pet care, I’d love to chat and see if we’d be a good fit.

Spring is finally here… which means more walks, more sunshine, and a LOT more sniffing 🌿🐾

It’s one of the best times of the year for our dogs—but it also comes with a few things we need to watch out for.

Here are some simple ways to keep your pup safe while still letting them enjoy all the spring fun 👇

☀️ 1. Watch for Overheating

Spring doesn’t always feel hot to us… but it can warm up quickly for your dog—especially in direct sunlight.

If your dog is:

Panting heavily

Slowing down on walks

Looking for shade

…it’s time for a break.

👉 Try to walk early in the morning or later in the evening when it’s cooler.

💧 2. Don’t Forget the Water

This one sounds obvious… but it’s easy to forget when you’re just “going for a quick walk.”

Dogs can get dehydrated faster than we think.

✔ Bring water on longer walks
✔ Use a collapsible bowl
✔ Offer water as soon as you get home

If you’re thirsty, your dog probably is too.

🐜 3. Check for Ticks (Every Time)

Spring = tick season 😬

After being outside, take a minute to check your dog—especially:

Around the ears

Under the collar

Between the toes

Around the tail

It only takes a few seconds and can prevent bigger problems later.

🌷 4. Be Careful with Spring Plants

Everything is blooming… but not everything is safe.

Some common plants that can be toxic to dogs:

Tulips

Daffodils

Lilies

If your dog likes to sniff (or taste 😅), keep an eye on what they’re getting into.

🏡 5. Secure Your Yard & Outdoor Space

Spring brings new smells, new animals, and lots of distractions.

That means more chances for your dog to try to wander.

✔ Check your fence for gaps
✔ Make sure gates latch properly
✔ Supervise outdoor time if needed

Because once they catch an interesting scent… they’re gone 😆

🐶 Final Thoughts

Spring should be fun—for both you and your dog 💛

With just a little extra awareness, you can avoid the common issues and enjoy the season stress-free.

Whether it’s backyard playtime or long walks around the neighborhood…
your pup is just happy to be out there with you 🐾

If you ever need help with walks, drop-ins, or just making sure your pet is safe and cared for while you’re away…

Spring = tick season 😬

If you’ve ever thought,
“Why is my dog barking like they’re announcing the end of the world?”
…you’re not alone.

As a pet sitter, I hear everything—doorbell barking, window barking, “I heard a leaf move” barking. And while some barking is totally normal, nonstop barking can be stressful for you, your dog, and honestly… your neighbors too.

The good news? There are ways to calm it down.

First—Why Is Your Dog Barking?

Dogs don’t bark just to be annoying (even though it feels like it sometimes). There’s usually a reason:

Boredom – nothing to do = barking becomes entertainment

Anxiety – especially when you leave

Alerting/guarding – “I must warn everyone about this squirrel”

Attention-seeking – barking works, so they keep doing it

Pent-up energy – they need an outlet

Figuring out the why is step one.

1. Tire Them Out (A Tired Dog = A Quiet Dog)

This is the #1 thing I see make a difference.

A dog that’s had:

a walk

playtime

or even a good sniff session

…is way less likely to bark nonstop.

Even 10–15 minutes of focused activity can make a huge difference.

2. Give Them Something Better to Do

A bored dog will absolutely find their own hobby… and sometimes that hobby is barking at nothing.

Try:

Dog puzzles

Frozen treats (peanut butter, yogurt, etc.)

Stuffed Kongs

Snuffle mats

I use these all the time during drop-ins and boarding, and it keeps dogs busy and calm.

3. Don’t Accidentally Reward the Barking

This one gets a lot of people.

If your dog barks and you:

yell

talk to them

give attention

…they might think, “Oh nice, this works!”

Instead:

Wait for a pause in barking

Then reward the quiet

Even a few seconds of quiet is a good place to start.

4. Limit Their “Trigger Zones”

If your dog loses it at:

the window

the front door

people walking by

Try:

closing blinds

using window film

moving their resting spot

Out of sight = way less barking.

5. Practice Short “Leaving” Moments

If your dog barks when you leave, start small.

Leave for a few minutes

Come back calmly

Slowly increase time

This helps them learn that you always come back.

6. Stay Calm (Even When They’re Not)

I know—it’s hard when your dog is barking nonstop.

But if you get loud or frustrated, it can actually make things worse. They feed off your energy.

Calm voice = calmer dog.

Real Talk From Me

When I have a dog in my care that starts barking, I don’t just ignore it and hope for the best.

I:

bring them inside if needed

redirect with play

give them something engaging

figure out what they actually need

And most of the time, the barking stops pretty quickly once their needs are met.

Final Thoughts

Barking isn’t “bad behavior”—it’s communication.

The goal isn’t to stop your dog from ever barking… it’s to help them feel calm enough that they don’t feel the need to bark all the time.

If you ever need help with a dog that struggles with barking or anxiety, this is something I deal with all the time.

Whether it’s drop-in visits or having them stay in my home, I focus on keeping dogs calm, comfortable, and engaged.

Try:

closing blinds

using window film

moving their resting spot

If your dog turns into a completely different animal the second you leave the house… you’re not alone 😅

Separation anxiety is something I see pretty often as a pet sitter, and it can show up in a lot of different ways — barking, whining, pacing, chewing things they shouldn’t (RIP to a few shoes), or just looking completely stressed.

The good news? There are some simple things you can do to help your dog feel more comfortable when you’re away.

🐾 What Separation Anxiety Can Look Like

Some dogs handle alone time just fine… others, not so much.

Signs your dog might be struggling:

Barking or howling after you leave

Scratching at doors or windows

Chewing furniture or random items

Pacing or acting restless

Accidents in the house (even if they’re fully trained)

Sometimes it’s not “bad behavior” — it’s anxiety.

🐾 Start with Short Practice Runs

One of the best things you can do is practice leaving in small steps.

Try this:

Leave for 5–10 minutes

Come back calmly (no big excitement)

Slowly increase the time

This helps your dog learn:
👉 “They always come back. I’ll be okay.”

🐾 Create a Safe, Comfortable Space

Dogs feel more secure when they have a space that’s “theirs.”

This could be:

A crate (if they’re crate trained)

A specific room

Their bed with a blanket that smells like you

Adding things like:

A favorite toy

A worn t-shirt with your scent

can make a big difference.

🐾 Keep Goodbyes Low-Key

This one is hard, I know.

But big emotional goodbyes can actually make anxiety worse.

Instead:

Stay calm when you leave

Don’t make it a big event

Same thing when you come home

You can love them up AFTER they’ve settled down a bit.

🐾 Mental Stimulation Helps A LOT

A bored dog = a stressed dog

Before you leave, try:

A walk

Playtime

Puzzle toys or treat-dispensing toys

A tired dog is much more likely to relax while you’re gone.

🐾 When Extra Help Makes a Difference

Sometimes dogs just need a little extra support — especially if they’re used to having people around.

That’s where drop-in visits or in-home care can really help.

Having someone come by to:

Let them out

Give them attention

Break up the day

can make a huge difference in their comfort level.

❤️ Final Thoughts

Separation anxiety can be tough, but it’s something that can improve with time, patience, and the right approach.

A specific room

Their bed with a blanket that smells like you

Adding things like:

A favorite toy

A worn t-shirt with your scent

can make a big difference.

🐾 Keep Goodbyes Low-Key

This one is hard, I know.

But big emotional goodbyes can actually make anxiety worse.

Instead:

Stay calm when you leave

Don’t make it a big event

Same thing when you come home

You can love them up AFTER they’ve settled down a bit.

🐾 Mental Stimulation Helps A LOT

A bored dog = a stressed dog

Before you leave, try:

A walk

Playtime

Puzzle toys or treat-dispensing toys

A tired dog is much more likely to relax while you’re gone.

🐾 When Extra Help Makes a Difference

Sometimes dogs just need a little extra support — especially if they’re used to having people around.

That’s where drop-in visits or in-home care can really help.

Having someone come by to:

Let them out

Give them attention

Break up the day

can make a huge difference in their comfort level.

❤️ Final Thoughts

Separation anxiety can be tough, but it’s something that can improve with time, patience, and the right approach.

And if you ever need help, that’s what I’m here for.

If you’re in Madison, Ohio or surrounding areas and need help with your pet while you’re away, I offer:

In-home boarding

Drop-in visits

Personalized care (one family at a time)

Feel free to reach out anytime — I’m always happy to help.creat

🐾 “Wait… Can Dogs Eat That?” – A Real-Life Guide to Keeping Your Pets Safe

If you’ve ever caught your dog staring at your food like they haven’t eaten in 3 years… you already know how this goes.

And if you’ve ever Googled “can dogs eat ___” while holding something in your hand and your dog is sitting there drooling… same.

I’ve been there too 😂

So let’s talk about some simple, real-life pet safety tips—the kind that actually come up in everyday life, not just the obvious stuff.

🍫 The “Just One Bite Won’t Hurt… Right?” Foods

Some foods are a hard no for dogs and cats—even in small amounts:

Chocolate

Grapes & raisins

Onions & garlic

Xylitol (found in sugar-free gum, candy, even peanut butter!)

And here’s the tricky part—a lot of these show up in normal foods.

That “just a little bite” of your snack? It might not be as harmless as it seems.

👉 Rule of thumb:
If you’re not 100% sure… it’s a no.

(Your dog will forgive you. Eventually.)

🐶 The Sneaky Stuff You Don’t Think About

This is the stuff I see more often than you’d expect:

Chicken bones from the trash

Socks (yes… socks 😳)

Hair ties

Kids’ toys

Dogs are basically tiny vacuum cleaners with confidence.

And cats? They’re over there quietly plotting chaos with string, rubber bands, and anything they’re not supposed to have.

🧼 Household Things That Can Be Dangerous

This one surprises people a lot.

Everyday items like:

Cleaning products

Essential oils

Certain plants (like lilies for cats 🚫)

These can be harmful—even if your pet isn’t directly “eating” them.

Cats especially are sensitive to things in the air and on surfaces, so what smells nice to us might not be safe for them.

🐾 “They Seem Fine…” (Until They’re Not)

One thing I always tell people:

Pets don’t always show right away when something’s wrong.

By the time they do, it can already be serious.

If something feels off—even a little—trust your gut and call your vet.

It’s always better to be the “over-cautious pet parent” than the “I wish I had checked sooner” one.

❤️ My #1 Safety Tip (That’s Not Really a Tip)

Honestly?

Just paying attention goes a long way.

Most accidents happen during normal, everyday moments:

Cooking

Cleaning

Letting them play

Being distracted for “just a second”

That’s real life. It happens.

But being aware of what’s around your pet can prevent so many problems.

🐕 From Me, As Someone Who Watches a LOT of Pets

Every pet is different.

Foods That Are Toxic or Unsafe for Dogs

1. Turkey Skin, Fat, and Bones

The skin and fatty parts can trigger pancreatitis, a painful and dangerous condition.
Turkey bones can splinter and cause choking or internal injury.

2. Stuffing

Stuffing almost always contains onions, garlic, scallions, or chives — all of which are toxic to dogs and can damage red blood cells.

3. Green Bean Casserole

While plain green beans are safe, the casserole version contains cream of mushroom soup, onions, garlic, and other ingredients that are harmful.

4. Ham

Ham is too salty and fatty for dogs and can lead to vomiting, diarrhea, and pancreatitis.

5. Gravy

Gravy often contains onions, garlic, butter, and lots of salt, making it unsafe for pets.

6. Pumpkin Pie

Plain pumpkin is safe, but pumpkin pie contains sugar, spices, and nutmeg — and nutmeg is toxic to dogs.

7. Chocolate Desserts

Chocolate is extremely toxic and can cause vomiting, tremors, seizures, heart issues, and can be fatal even in small amounts.

8. Grapes & Raisins

Even tiny amounts can cause sudden kidney failure in dogs.

9. Alcohol

Dogs are extremely sensitive to alcohol. Even small amounts can lead to low blood sugar, seizures, coma, or death.

10. Mac and Cheese

Many dogs are lactose intolerant, and the high fat content can cause stomach upset or pancreatitis.

Safe Thanksgiving Treats (In Small Portions)

If you want to include your dog in the celebration, these options are safe:

Plain turkey breast (no skin, no bones)

Plain green beans

Plain pumpkin (not pie filling)

Plain carrots

Plain apples (no seeds)

Always introduce new foods slowly and in small amounts.

Final Thoughts

Thanksgiving is a wonderful time to share love and food with the family — just be sure your pup’s plate stays safe. When in doubt, stick to plain, unseasoned foods and avoid anything with sauces, spices, or fat.

If your dog eats something dangerous, call your vet or Pet Poison Helpline (855-764-7661) right away.
